DRAWING 1: BEGINNING

"It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see."

If you can't draw but wish you could, and believe you can't learn, this course is for you.

Drawing is a skill that can be taught and learned. With proper instruction and practice, almost anyone can become proficient at “seeing, analyzing, and applying” line and tone.

Course Objective

The purpose of this course is to develop draftsmen who can use dry media (graphite, charcoal) to make marks on paper that effectively depict a concept, personal object, landscape, still life, or structure. Instruction will apply equal focus on tonal control (values) and linear perspective.

Whether you have taken drawing classes or have had no training, this class will benefit you in learning to properly “see” and to draw structures, landscapes, and still-life drawings.

What To Expect As A Result Of Taking This Course

  • To understand and effectively use materials common in graphite and charcoal drawing
  • To properly see and skeptically analyze what you think you are seeing
  • To learn the various methods of proportional measuring and transferring information to the drawing paper
  • To effectively represent 3-dimensional objects on a 2-dimensional surface
  • To effectively depict the illusion of space and volume through linear and/or atmospheric perspective and with the aid of tonal control through separation of values
  • Homework and practice exercises will be assigned each week (3+ hours weekly)
  • To learn basic concepts in composition and organizing elements of a drawing
  • To draft convincing drawings in linear and aerial perspective:
    • 1-point, 2-point, and 3-point linear perspective
    • Repeating objects with spaces in perspective
    • Inclines (stairs, pitched roofs, and odd angles)
    • Ellipses (arches and cylinders in perspective)
    • Scenic views in aerial perspective (Creating the illusion of depth and space)
    • To learn to personally source material from personal objects around student's home, photographs, the internet, and imagination
  • To learn to work with and without a perspective grid
  • To learn to properly evaluate tonal densities from live objects and scenes
